How to Apply for a Spanish Student Visa
Secure Admission to a Program in Spain and Get the Official Letter of Acceptance
Begin by researching and applying to recognized Spanish universities, colleges, or language schools. Once admitted, the institution will issue an official letter of acceptance. This document is critical for your visa application and must clearly outline the duration and nature of your studies.
Ensure the institution is officially accredited, as non-accredited institutions may jeopardize your visa eligibility.
Key Statistic: Spain hosts over 200,000 international students annually, with most pursuing undergraduate or postgraduate programs.
Prepare Necessary Documents
- Passport. Ensure your passport is valid for the duration of your stay, with at least two blank pages.
- Visa Application Form. Complete the National Visa application form (for stays over 90 days).
- Proof of Funds. Show bank statements, a notarized financial guarantee, or proof of scholarships demonstrating you have funds to cover your living expenses.
- Health Insurance. Obtain private health insurance covering a minimum of €30,000 in medical expenses.
- Medical Certificate. Provide a doctor’s note confirming you are free of contagious diseases and fit for travel.
- Criminal Record Certificate. Submit a police background check issued within the last three months, translated into Spanish.
- Fee Payment Proof. Include evidence of fee payments for your course/program.
- Passport-Sized Photos. Provide two recent, high-quality photos meeting Schengen visa standards.
Additional requirements may apply based on your nationality and program type, so verify with your local consulate.
Apply at the Embassy/Consulate Near You
- Locate the Spanish Embassy or Consulate responsible for your state. If your state lacks one, you may need to apply at a neighboring state’s Spanish consulate.
- Schedule an appointment for submission. This can usually be done online or via phone.
- Submit your application in person, as biometric data (fingerprints) is often required.
- Some embassies may require a visa interview. Be prepared to answer questions about your program and future plans.
Pay Visa Fees
US students need to pay €132 ($160) for a student visa and the payment method depends on the consulate. Make sure you’ve double checked the fee as it can change.
Wait for Processing
Visa processing can take up to 3 months, but can be as short as 15 days in some cases. Delays can occur during peak seasons, so apply at least 2-3 months before your intended travel date.
Approximately 95% of Spanish student visa applications are approved, provided all requirements are met.
Receive Visa
Depending on your embassy’s policy, collect your passport in person or have it mailed to you with the visa attached.
Double-check all visa details, including duration and type, to ensure accuracy.
Travel and Obtain Residence Card
- For stays longer than six months, apply for a Student Residence Card (TIE) within 30 days of arriving in Spain.
- Visit the local Immigration Office or police station in your city of residence.
- Bring the required documents, including your passport, visa, and proof of address in Spain.
Key Statistic: The cost of obtaining a residence card is typically €15-€20. Processing time varies but usually takes 3-6 weeks.
