What Documents Do I Need To Study in Spain from The US?

So you want to study abroad in Spain and you want to know what documents will be needed? We compiled a list for you to make the process easier.

Pile of Legal Documents

Required Documents For Students

1. National Visa Application Form:

All applicants must complete and sign the visa application. ALL SECTIONS MUST BE FILLED OUT. The form is not innately difficult but you must make sure all sections are filled out correctly to ensure the process goes smoothly. If the applicant is a minor, a parent or guardian must sign the application.

2. Photograph:

A current, passport-sized, colored photograph with a light background is necessary. This is a picture that you would take for a passport or ID so you cannot wear a hat, glasses, or anything that would mess with your face. It is recommended that you go to a UPS or other postal service office because they know the type of photo that would be required.

3. Valid Passport:

You need both your physical copy and a photocopy of your valid, unexpired passport. The passport must be valid for at least the duration of your planned trip. If your passport is due to expire soon, apply for a new one as soon as possible, and it might be a good idea to pay the extra fee to expedite the process to ensure your new passport will arrive on time.

4. Proof of Acceptance for the Study:

You need the original and a copy of your document that proves your acceptance at the university or program that you will be attending while in Spain.

5. Proof of Financial Means:

Original and copies of the documents that prove the student (or their parents or legal guardians) are financially able to cover the expenses of the student’s stay during their time in Spain. They must be financially supported enough to be able to afford their program, living expenses, and travel to and from Spain.

6. Health Insurance:

Proof of health insurance is required when you are studying in Spain. Both an original and a copy of the certificate proving your insurance exists is necessary. The insurance policy must cover all the risk insured by Spain’s public health system. Some abroad programs help you get an insurance card.

7. Criminal Record Check Certificate:

Applicants of legal age who apply for a student visa must obtain a criminal record check certificate. This ensures you are able to study in Spain and is an important part of the visa process. You must submit the original and a copy of the certificate.

8. Medical Certificate:

Applicants who require a visa must submit an original and copy of a medical certificate. This certificate is to show that you don’t suffer from any diseases or disabilities that could cause serious repercussions for public health.

9. Proof of Residence:

You must provide proof of legal residence while in Spain. Whether it is a residencia, homestay, or an apartment, you must have proof that you are living in the appropriate district while staying in Spain.

10. Payment of the Visa Fee:

There is a fee of 80 euros that comes with the visa application. This is necessary for studying in Spain.

Additionally, you'll need to prepare several other documents depending on your specific circumstances and the requirements of the program you're attending. For instance, if you're participating in a student exchange program, you might need to provide a Letter of Nomination from your home university, indicating their endorsement of your participation. Similarly, if your study involves research, you might need to include a Research Project Outline, which details the objectives and methodology of your work, as well as any collaborations with Spanish universities or research institutions.

Lastly, it's essential to gather all your paperwork in the correct order and check whether any documents need to be translated into Spanish or legalized before submission. The process of legalizing documents can vary depending on the country you're coming from, so it’s wise to check with the Spanish consulate nearest to you for specific requirements. Be sure to allow extra time for these procedures, as they can sometimes be lengthy. This meticulous preparation will help ensure a smoother application process, leaving you more time to plan for your exciting educational journey in Spain.
